Nationalism

Do you think Changez's love his country would have been as strong as it is, if he hadn't witnessed and experienced the after-math of the 9/11 attacks?

  1. No, I don't. As I was saying on Laura's question, I feel like the attacks and the racism that occurred following them was what sparked the nationalistic feelings in Changez. It seemed like before that, he was perfectly fine with being a minority in the US and he was integrating himself just fine, not worrying too much about what was going on in his homeland. To me, it seemed like he only started caring about having a beard, and exhibiting his Pakistani pride after being a target of racism and being challenged for his nationality.

  2. I agree with you Maya when you say that the attacks really brought out Changez's nationalism. But I do think Changez was always devoted to his country. Like other people are saying in other posts, Changez never really could become a true American because of his Pakistani roots. The 9/11 attacks may have really defined his love, but I think his love has always been strong.

  3. Definetely not. I think that Changez was already devoted to his country. But it was an eye opener for him realize I don't belong here. If anything it made him love Lahore more. Even though the terrorist attacks happened, he would never forget the whole reason he is the way he is.

  4. I have a feeling that he would be just as in love and connected to his country had 911 not occured. However, I think that Changez really realized his connection to his country once he was looked down upon by Americans. I think that this prejudice made him feel as if he didn't belong (which is understandble) and he longed for a feeling of connectedness (which he could get in his home country)

  5. I'm not sure if Changez loves his country as much as he dislikes America. The ties he has to Lahore have more to do with family than the actual country itself. But yes 9/11, or rather America's reaction to 9/11, made him realize no matter how at home he felt, the Americans would never except him as one of the family.

  6. Laura, I ABSOLUTELY agree with what you just posted. I think acceptance is a big factor in Changez's national loyalty.
